Fluorine is a fundamental element which occurs naturally and is contained in various minerals, for example, apatite and fluorspar (fluorite).
Fluorine causes corrosion in chemical processes, a challenge which means that fluorides, substances that contain the element fluorine, are often landfilled.
Raw material source
In our ReeMAP project, the intention is to extract fluorine as a by-product. Currently, there are limited raw-material sources of fluorine within the EU.
In industry, it is used in various forms and there is a great demand for fluorine products. Therefore, the industry is actively seeking to develop new sources, as described in this article.
Fluorine applications
There are many different industrial and medical applications for fluorine.
You can find industrial applications in:
- hydrofluoric acid production,
- production of recycled steel,
- ceramics,
- and the glass industry
Some examples of products containing fluorine are:
- Teflon
- Toothpaste
- Cleaning agents
